Stretch Out Those Greenbacks

There’s nothing quite like saving an extra buck or two, except possibly vacationing at some of the swankiest spots around the globe while you’re at it! And I’m not just referring to milk money, but hundreds of dollars. Check out a few preferred cheap travel destinations below.

Argentina

In terms of year-on-year savings, 2017 is reported as being the best year to visit Argentina in almost two decades. The current exchange rate is 16.89 Argentinian pesos per US dollar, which provides roughly double the amount the very same crumply bill you left in your back pocket did in 2015. So, feel free to splurge on that fancy shmancy purse or overly-priced Malbec while enjoying the luxuries of a four-star hotel for a mere $55. And if time permits, I’d recommend visiting the impressive Andes peaks, the vineyards of Mendoza, or the widest spanning—albeit split in two—curtain of water on earth, aka, Iguazu Falls.

Malaysia

Home to the glorious Petronas Twin Towers, Malaysia offers a dip into Southeast Asian culture and lifestyle that’s currently offering one of its best rate dollar to ringgit exchange rates in years at one to 4.30. The gorgeous beach front of Langkawi is a no-brainer first stop. From there, catch a panoramic view of the country from a Langkawi cable car, enjoy the architecture surrounding the Malacca strait, and definitely dig into the local laksa and nasi kandar, or “mixed rice,” options as much as possible.

New Zealand

A measly three years back, the US and New Zealand dollars were nearly equivalent. The gap has now reached 1.37 New Zealand per US dollar, which means there’s never been a better time to take advantage of your inner Hobbit. The South Island is widely seen as a photographic masterpiece because of its jaw-dropping view of seemingly untapped natural beauty: pristine fields and mountains upon mountains. Beyond the wow factor, New Zealand’s Auckland has recently been cited as one of the world’s most livable cities.

Venezuela

Visiting the tallest waterfall in the world, Angel Falls, might be an adventure worth considering. Despite all of its political turmoil, the country’s natural wonders—the white sand beaches of Morrocoy, tabletop Mount Roraima, and Los Roques Archipelago National Park—are usually safe places to visit when done through travel agencies. And while the official exchange rate is listed as 10 Venezuelan bolivars per US dollar, the actual, unofficial rate is currently at an unrivaled 8,000 bolivars per dollar. Financially speaking, Venezuela affords, by far, the best bang for your buck.

The number of great cheap travel destinations seems to be growing in spades due to the relatively strong dollar this year. South American countries particularly shine in terms of all around thrift and pleasure. But take advantage of this perk soon; the financial market is as fickle as a feather in a stream!
